ASUS K8V SE installation problems

I recently bought the ASUS 8KV SE de luxe board, together with a Athlon 54
3200, Maxtor SATA 300gb, Asus V9999/TD. I tried to install winXp pro. I got
a lot of problems.
This leads me to the following questions:

1. This board has two SATA controlers, VIA en Promise, De harddisk was
connected to Promise. I have the impression this was part of the problem
(the drivers were not approved by Microsoft), so I changed to the VIA
controller. Do anyone know which controler to use?

2. Formating with WinXP did not succeed (when using the Promise controler
(it got stuck at 33 %). So I used Maxblast, which went well. Is this the way
it should be?

3. The system is working oke right now. That is to say: installing SP1 would
cause the system to crash. I have to start all over then (using backups did
not work very well). Do anyone know how this can happen (I already stopped
using the VIA'4in1' drivers, but that makes no difference). Could it be
caused by certain drivers? Is it something else?

Thanks in advanced for the help,

Antonioli

I'm not an expert on this. I was having problems myself understanding
what was going on.

On the 25th I started a thread "Need Help with Ultra DMA/133 and
DVD/CD Drives on A8V"

I wasn't trying to set up an SATA drive, but I got some very helpful
responses. I recommend that you look at that thread.

Use the Promise drivers, there is nothing wrong with them.
I have SP2 installed and are using the Promise S-ATA controller for my second
HD.
My first HD is connected to the primary IDE of the VIA controller.
Once you have all drivers installed there is no problem.

Before you install any driver make sure to set the options in the BIOS
accordingly. Read the manual for the options.
When you perform a new installation of Windows XP, don't forget to het the F6
key when asked for and install the Promise and VIA drivers.
