ASUS K8V SE Deluxe - SATA Drive lights

I have read and re-read the manual. Searched the ASUS site... (like I
thought that might help !)
Using SATA drives is there some connection I should find to make the HD
activity light operable?
There is an IDE connector, but this appears to only work for IDE (PATA)
drives, not SATA, or do I have it plugged in wrong?

A check in Google suggests the 8237 doesn't map SATA
activity to the IDE_LED. And for me this is an important
feature, as LED activity when you are not expecting it,
can be an early indication of some kind of problem with
a computer.

I would fill out a web based report to Asus, to help them
get the message that a working LED is important.

(I am assuming here, that you've already tried reversing the
LED pins on the PANEL connector.)

As the previous poster replied the leds dont light on the Via controller,
however they do light when the Paradise controller is used... which is one of
the reasons I use that one.

LED Activity when ur not expecting it is a sign of a problem with a
computer?

Virus/trojan type activity. If I'm not working on a computer, a
flashing drive LED means "something needs investigating". Maybe
indexing needs to be turned off. And even in normal use, the drive
LED helps identify how programs work, like if they are doing
automatic saves, or swapping, etc.

I keep my router in clear view too, and I can see when I'm being
port scanned, without any fancy software. (We're talking greedy
scanning, more than one probe per second. A much slower scan would
go unnoticed.) Changing my DHCP lease usually fixes that.

Yep you're quite right, only the Promise controller and normal IDE is
wired through to the IDE activity light. It's been a consistant flaw of
asus' to omit this feature. Also JFYI there is no boot up beep from the
board speaker either.

You noticed that too eh... I had been using the board quite a while before I
noticed the missing beep... in fact I could have swore it was there when first
installed some months ago but must have been mistaken as I certainly get mine to
give the okay single beep now and the speakers okay.... I checked it.. No big
deal I suppose but yes another clanger by Asus. Maybe the last bios update
perhaps?

And just what process on your computer would you expect to be doing
disk accesses while the system is idle, Mr. Crapper? The sole excuse
I can think of would be the metronomic pulse generated if you don't
turn off autorun on the CD. If your system is constantly doing
"something", than I suggest you turn off your modem or router and see
what happens. You may be the zombie I get virus laden e-mails from.
