Hi, I have an Asus P4S800 motherboard and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
All-In-Wonder. For some reason my Video Card isn't working properly. I
recently formatted my computer in hope to fix the problem but It did
not. I have installed all the updated Ati Drivers and still it didn't
fix the problem. Basically my computer freezes during gaming. On
certain games, like Half Life: Counter Strike, some of the graphics are
messed up. It looks like theres splattered paint on the hands of my
character and on the floor. I recently returned my motherboard for a
new one because the USB ports stopped working. The video card situation
ahs always been a problem. I am wondering if theres a compatibility
issue with the ATI cards and the ASUS boards. The ATI card i have is
made by ATI. From what i understand, ASUS and a few other companies
also make the ATI cards. If anyone could help me out, i'd relaly
appreciate it. It is really fustrating when my computer freezes and I
have no idea why. Thanks.

Hi Dominick,

No solutions, just a word to let you know that I too am in such a
predicament with ATI cards. I bought a 9600 SE Radeon last year and
have thus used it with 2 that's 2 different motherboards. One a Via and
the other a SOYO with Via chipset. My first computer would lock up
during gaming with no reason as to why. My second computer has tearing
during gaming and locking up with the driver supplied on the cd. If I
install the new driver (from their website) I bsod during boot. I am
going to throw the towel in on this. I can't stand the frustration
anymore. I'm going to buy from a different vendor. And I will never
ever ever never
buy anything from ATI!!!!!

Feeling your pain,
BB.

Have either of you checked the power supplies for the AGP slots of your
motherboards? It may be that the cards are drawing more power than the
slot can supply. If your BIOS allows it, try raising the the AGP voltage a
little and see if that helps.

Dominick,

Just thought I'd let you know how things worked out. I just purchased
and installed a GeForce 5500, and ran Castle Wolfenstein on my original
Soyo motherboard and the graphics were impeccable. I couldn't believe
how easy it was getting it working. I stand by my last final statement
on video boards.

I have just upgraded the graphics card from a GEForce 5200 to a
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Atlantis and have been having similar
problems.
I have also tried upgrading the power supply, thinking that there may
not have been enough juice for the card to run properly.

I have the following kit :
Motherboard : ASUS P4S800
Processor : Intel 4 3.06Mhz CPU
Memory : 1 Gb of RAM (2x 512Mb, 184 Pin DIMM) DDR 3200

Graphics Card : Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Atlantis
Power Supply : 500 Watt Power Supply (350W supply also had the
same problems).

I have submitted a support request to Asus, and am in the process of
doing the same to ATI.

You didn't mention your operating system or DirectX version. Bear in mind
that Windows 2000 wasn't really meant for gaming. Make sure that you have
the latest service pack (SP4) if you are using Windows 2000, and
at least Service Pack 1 if you are using Windows XP. Make sure that you have
either DirectX 9.0b (plus the MS04-016 (839643) security fix) or 9.0c
(9.0c is a huge download though - try to find a magazine CD that includes
it, although the Radeon 9800 Pro won't support the new features of 9.0c
anyway, so it's only worth it if you have a DirectX version earlier than
9.0b).

Re: the computer freezing during gaming - this could also be caused by bad
RAM. What happens when you benchmark the system with 3DMark2001?

Re: the messed up graphics - This definitely sounds like a driver problem.
Be patient and wait for a new driver from ATI. Have you tried the
Catalyst 5.4 drivers released by ATI on 7th April 2005?

Also try the card in another machine.

i have the same motherboard and a sapphire radeon 9800 pro

u might want to try to set the agp slot to 4x in the bios. It's a
known issue with the p4s800. It certainly helped solving my lock up
problems while playing games.

perhaps...
Good luck!

I have P4s800/D-E and ATI AIW 9800 128 Pro and needed latest ATI driver
update to run Splinter Cell CT which runs fine. Now my TV capture and
record hang after about 5-15 minutes. With year old drivers TV was OK.
Changing services loaded, resolution, color depth, etc. made no
difference. I've read that there might be a sound sync problem when
using Audigy sound cards, but can't find anyway to test or correct it
if it exists. Response from ATI support was on the order of
"Something's wrong with your computer."

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Dr Bill
