I have a problem with the bios on my son's computer. First let me tel
you the story upon how this mess started. My son is well lets sa
exparimental with computers, some how he messed with the FSB in th
bios settings and when he rebooted it wouldn't work...just freezin
up before the OS loads... So he brought the problem to me and
cleared the RTC RAM and the cmos via the instructions in the manual

Now the problem is, when i boot the computer it asks for a syste
disk. i put the newest version of the BIOS i got from the asu
website along with the AWDFLASH.exe utility it calls for. When th
awdflash.exe loads, i get a messege that says source file not found
I've tried other versions of the bios for this motherboard and stil
get nothing. PLEASE any information would be helpful!

Have you tried going into the bios and setting everything back to default?
If you really need to re flash the bios, find a version of awdflash that
allows you to type in the name of the bin.

The problem is, the bios doesn't exist. right when it boots up, it
goes

BIOS ROM checksum error

Detecting floppy frive A media....
INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

One version of the awdflash lets me type it in, and when i do, simply
nothing happens and after about 15 seconds the floppy light goes off
and it stops. With the other version from the asus website, it comes
up with the error Source File Not Found

Are you renaming the file to A7N8X-E.ROM when you put
the BIOS on the floppy ? The file should be 524,288 bytes
if you decompressed it properly.

How would I rename the .bin file to .ROM?

Double click on "My Computer"
Select Tools:Folder_Options from the menu
Click the View tab at the top of Folder_Options
Locate "Hide file extensions for known file types".
Remove the check mark from the box next to it, so
the Hiding function is disabled. Now the ".bin" part
should be visible.

Then, navigate to the folder containing the .bin file and
you should be able to select it and change the "name.extension"
to something you can use. Life is a lot easier with the
extensions showing.

Yup, that's certainly true here. Files are still known by file
extensions. The operating system isn't smart enough to make up for
hidden file extensions.

Have fun.

That will happen if you just type the command as awdflash, as it is looking
for a source file named (nothing specified). If your latest BIOS software
is named "A7N8X.BIN" (for example), then you need to flash it from a
bootable floppy disk, using a command that would look like:
A:\>awdflash a7n8x.bin
Assuming that the program awdflash.exe and the bios file a7n8x.bin were both
on the floppy disk, and the floppy disk drive was recognized by the system
as drive A:

But after you successfully flash the BIOS, you've got a couple other
possible issues to deal with. First, you will need to enter the BIOS setup
screens to load DEFAULT settings. THEN, you might need to to a repair
install of Windows XP, if you were booting off of a scsi or sata format hard
drive. This could be why you are getting the message asking for a system
disk. Good luck, -Dave

I wish i could get a command prompt. immediatly after i push the power
button, it comes on and asks for a system disk. its definatly not the
OS asking for one.
