Open Control Panel/Folder Options
Click the File Types Tab
Locate the .dat extension in the list and highlight it
Click delete
..dat is one of those extensions that should not be associated to
anything at all. It is used by many different types of programs and
they all usually know where to find their own .dat files.
Control Panel - Folder Options - File types. Look down for DAT,
highlight and click Remove (there should be no association for DAT,
which is used for many purposes)
