Assigning Pantone and color seperating, how?

Im trying to figure out how to use PMS colors and to print in seperations. I
know Word isnt the best tool for this but its what I have to use. I know
like for text, you change the color of the text like you would normally but
change the Color Model to Pantone (which for some reason isnt listed in the
drop down, I thought it was before).

Word can't do very much in the way of colors; it has never offered Pantone
color models; and there is no way to do separations.

There are websites that give Pantone to RGB conversions; but if you have a
client who requires an exact Pantone match, you are risking your livelihood
here.

It's not that Word isn't the best tool for this: Word is simply NOT the tool
for this.

I can agree, Word and Publisher seem to work very little or not at all when
it comes to this. Exact color matches are not really necessary, just need to
be able to send to a DPM machine in seperations. It seems the only way Ill
be able to do this I guess is to change the color of the text from black to
white. Havent figured out what Im going to do about color seperated images
yet

This sounds as a typical "convert that thing to PDF and do all color
management stuff there" task.

I suggest you try out comp.text.pdf ask the cracks there.

Word not at all, Publisher 2003 should handle what you describe with no
problem.

Tools>Commercial Printing Tools>Process Colors (CMYK)
File>Print>Advanced Print Settings - Output: Separations

No, there's not a listing for Pantone, Focaltone, Toyo, etc. because they
are Spot Colors. If you want the spot color libraries you'll need to go to a
higher caliber app such as InDesign, QuarkXPress, PageMaker, whatever - part
of the reason behind the significantly higher price. In order to 'define'
any spots in Publisher you'l need to determine the CMYK %s, convert to RGB
values & plug the numbers in using the New Ink button in the Color Printing
dialog (after selecting 'Spot Colors' or 'Process Colors plus Spot Colors').

The only way to get Pantone colours to work in Word is to place them in Word
inside an .eps file. Word still won't be able to do colour seps, but the
Pantone colours inside the .eps file will show up in Acrobat or in prepress
equipment. You won't be able to assign the Pantone colours to any word
elements (text, graphics, etc.)

And if you're printing separations for spot colors, it really doesn't matter
what the color is set to, since the printout will be black-and-white, and
the color will be produced on the press by using the appropriate ink. The
only thing to be careful about is to make sure that you use the same RGB
color for each area that is to receive the same Pantone spot color.

Hi Greg:

As others have told you, Word cannot do separations, or Pantone.

That's because Word is restricted to the RGB colour model, and you cannot
describe Pantone colours (accurately...) in RGB.

You might want to talk your people OUT of using Pantone... Each Pantone
colour is a separate "ink", and each ink is one trip through the printing
press, and each trip through the press adds one unit of cost to each
impression.

A job printed in CMYK costs four times what a job printed in black does.
Add three Pantone colours for the logo in the running header and you just
increased the cost of the entire job by 3/7ths.

If the original print run was going to cost you $4,000.00, the three Pantone
inks will set you back another $3,000, making $7,000.00 for the run :)

Cheers
