Assign System Sound for Wireless Network connection

I want to assign a system sound every time my Wireless Zero Configuration
connects to my wireless network (normally at system startup). However, I
can't find a description in Control Panel > Sounds > Program events. Can I
create one? If so, how? I'm using Windows XP SP3, and the device I use to
connect is a 2Wire (ZD 1211B) IEEE 802.11 b+g USB Adapter. Thanks.

I don't think that it's possible to configure a separate sound for when a network
connection is established without using some sort of third-party application.

The sound that Windows plays when a network connection is made is defined in the
"Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel under the program event "System
Notification" in the "Windows" section of event sounds.

The sound that you define under "System Notification" is heard when other
notifications (usually those from "system tray" applications) are displayed, as well
as for a network connection, so it's not exclusive to that event.

Tim, if I understand you correctly, the sound I assign to "network connection
established" would be the same as any other "start program" (or "System
Notification") sound? In other words, I can't be specific about *which
program* I want the sound assigned to? Ah well, it was worth a try--thanks.

Maybe, someday, Microsoft could enable users to assign a sound to a "Network
Connection Established" event. (I realize an icon shows in the Task Bar; but
I feel an audible cue would be helpful, too.) That would alleviate the need
for third-party software you spoke of... Anyway thanks again.

Not quite right - the event is called "System Notification" that you have to set a
wav file to (in the "Windows" section under the "Sounds" tab of the "Sounds and Audio
Devices" control panel)

Events that are classed as "System Notifications" are mainly limited to "Balloon
Notifications" that appear over icons in your "System Tray" - such as your "Now
connected to..." balloon.

So, although, as I said, it's by no means "exclusive" there are not many sounds of
that type that occur very often.

In fact, on my system, I hear that sound only when I connect to the internet and when
Windows Defender starts a search for updates - so it's far from confusing for me...

Try setting a unique sound for "System Notification" and just listen if you hear it
more often than at establishing a connection. You may well find it's the only time
you hear it.
