Arrange icons by name doesn't

I have about 27 icons on my desktop. It would be nice to have them arranged
alphabetically, but the menu item "Arrange icons - by name" doesn't, or at
least just sort of. I can understand Microsoft always putting the Recycle
Bin and one or two other MS programs first, but it then arranges some
alphabetically then goes back to A again and does the rest.
Why ?

Stuart,
I found that sorting by name first sorts folders and then sorts shortcuts!
You probably have a mixture of both on the desktop.
Microsoft also sorts icons in all user desktop first, and suggests clearing
the all user desktop.
Did not stop the folder first then shortcut behavior, which happens in any
folder.
How could Microsoft think this is useful?

A possible work around is to make a back up of yourdesk top in correct order
to a file and then if your iclons are messed up copy the backup into the
desktop file.
