Archiving

When trying to archive, I get this message:

Error while archiving folder "Inbox" in store "Personal Folders". The path
specified for the file C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst is not valid. (similar messages for tasks
and calendar)

When I transferred files and setting from an old computer recently, I did
not transfer the archive.pst. Should I have? Is that what's giving me the
error message?

The path you mention above is indicative of Windows 98, which I would
conjecture was your old O/S. Now that you're probably on a different O/S
(Windows XP, probably, since you say you have a new computer) disable
archiving, then use File>Archive to change the location of the archive file
to either its default location or another location not in a system folder.
Reenable it, applying the change to all folders.

Thanks. I renamed the old archive file archive-old.pst. Is it a good idea
to get all my old archived files on this computer and how would I do that?

Also, I just realized when I did that it created an Archive folder but then
immediately my screen jumped to the Persona Folders page and the archive
file disappeared. I tried it twice.

If you can reliably access the old archives in some way such that you can
copy them to your current computer at some future time, I don't see why they
can't remain offline. I'd put the old PSTs on one or more CDs (a CD can
hold only about 700 MB) or a DVD and keep online only those archives that I
believe I may need near-term.
