Application shortuct icon changes automatically

We run a database application from a shortcut via a mapped network drive.
The mapped drive = \\servername\sharename
The shortcut =
Target: M:\Host\run1.exe
Start In: m:\Host\
This runs fine normally. We also have another application that runs from
\\servername\sharename\app\runme.exe using the netbios path. As soon as we
run the 2nd application, the Target line in the shortcut for application1
changes automatically to read \\servername\sharename\Host\run1.exe.

Our application1 requires the use of the mapped drive format to function
properly, is there a way of disabling this auto change function in the
shortcut? This is happening on a Windows 2000 SP4 server, but I have had
reports of it happening on other Windows OS's. Any help would be great!

Thank you very much for the speedy response to my question I will test these
ideas out. I had run across these before, but I was uncertain if they
applied as the problem happens when you access the 2nd app as it seems to
change threcord about the app1 shortcut using the mapped drive. Quite odd.
Im sure there is a work around but this is an annoying function that Id like
to "turn off".
