Application Management service

Hi
I have just read on this forum that I shouldn't get system errors in my
event log. I always thought these were normal. I often get one for "Unknown
Device Driver", and sometimes I get "Application Management service".
Yesterdasy the "Application Management service" generated 102 errors in 11
seconds, so I suspect there is a problem. Anyone know what to do about it-I
clicked the link for help on the information box, but it said no more
information was available.

Perhaps it was my earlier posting on a "Slow Boot" issue.

No, System Event log error(s) are not normal.

It's best to create a custom console and set the logs to
capture only Warnings & Errors. The informationals are
successful events and in my opinion clutter up the logs.

Most if not all occur because something isn't right with the
PC. In your case of an Unknown Device Driver should be
investigated and resolved.

Some occur because of Service mismatches, where a Service
is set to Automatic but a dependant service is not running.

Some OEMs are pretty sloppy on system configuration and
let many machines leave the factory with a "Master" image
that has System Event log error(s). One of the 1st items I'll
check during servicing is those logs.

Hi

Thanks, I have had a look at what was running, and I think I may have found
a service mismatch, so hopefully that is cured.

I don't know how to go about fixing an unknown device driver problem though.
What should I do?

Hard to give you a definite answer. On some Intel based motherboards
XP will not have the driver for the SMBus controller. Usually adding
the latest Chipset driver will resolve it. I would probably Uninstall the
device, reboot and see if gets redetected and is still identified as an
"Unknown Device". I would probably use Device Manager with the
View option "Show Hidden Devices" and look through the categories
for any phantoms and also check that a category called "Other" does
not exist.

I've found three driver updates, and am going to look for more another
day-there are at least three more that could apparently do with updating, so
hopefully that is cured.

Thanks for your help.
