Application log fills with Perflib errors

I have a server and the application log completely fills up every day with
the following error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Perflib
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1008
Date: 5/7/2005
Time: 6:58:56 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXXXXXXXX
Description:
The Open Procedure for service "NwlnkNb" in DLL
"C:\WINNT\system32\perfctrs.dll" failed. Performance data for this service
will not be available. Status code returned is data DWORD 0.
Data:
0000: 02 00 00 00 ....

I don't have performance counters turned on and I'm not sure what to do to
correct this. Can anyone give me some help with this?
