Appearing parentheses when selecting/copying text

At times when I select text and copy it, grayed parentheses or brackets will
appear around that text. I can't delete them. They don't print and it
doesn't do it everytime. I can't figure out what is making them appear.

These sound like bookmark markers, but I can't imagine why they would appear
when you copy text.
