apostrophes & quotation marks become #8217; and other figures

Apostrophes & quotation marks change to #8217; or #8220; or #8221; in
correspondence with one friend, and to a small box with another
correspondent. I am assured that no other email messages come through that
way. What's wrong with my settings and how do I fix it?

Here's what I did to fix my problem with the "little squares".

1. Open Word and go to Tools>AutoCorrect Options
2. Go to "AutoFormat" tab and CLEAR "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"
3. Go to "AutoFormat As You Type" tab and CLEAR "Straight quotes" with
"smart quotes"
