Aperture size

S

Sheldon Roger

Running the 3.8 Catalyst drivers with a 9600 Pro adapter. System is
Win XP HE on an NF7-S with 1 meg of Mushkin 3200 memory. Had been
running with a 32 AGP aperture size at 8x. After trying to change the
aperture size could no longer boot and couldn't install any other
drivers unless aperture set at 32. What gives?

what were you setting it to 256? I use 128 with all drivers so far no boot problems

You must have installed the latest via 4in1 drivers. They lock the Aperture size
to 32. You might want to roll back to older Via drivers.

is that the hyper 4.51's causing that?

How do you find that out for sure (the current running aperture size)?
Where did you read about the aperture size? I run the new Hyperions
and Sandra says my aperture is still 256....

Hi
The NF7-S M/B is not a Via board! I have the same setup and my aperture size
is 128. Clear the CMOS and reset the Bios to optimum defaults.

The NF7-S does NOT use Via drivers!!!! It has an NForce chipset and I doubt
the Via drivers would even install. If they did install it would most likely
make for a mell of a hess and the system probably would not boot into
Windows afterwards!

APERTURE
Pronunciation: 'apurchur

WordNet Dictionary

Definition: [n] an opening; usually small
[n] a device that controls amount of light admitted
[n] an opening in something

In this case it opens a 'hole' to use system ram

What is an 'aperture' ?

Thanks for the responses. When I change the BIOS setting (BIOS 19) to any
setting oter than 32 can't boot ionto Win XP. Get a message that the
userinit file can't intialize. BTW I am the administrator and have a
wireless network, but can't see where a BIOS change would affect Win
startup.

The NF7-S, based on nForce2 chipset (MCP-T + SPP), supports the latest
AMD Athlon XP processors with 200/266/333/400 FSB, (400 FSB support in
version 2.0 only) and features new dual 400MHz DDR memory controllers
that deliver up to a 50% increase in bandwidth. With the nForce2
MCP-T, the APU (Audio Processing Unit) delivers Dolby Digital 5.1
cinematic-quality sound and 3D positional audio to your home PC. By
SoundstormTM technology, the NF7-S supports Real-time audio encoding
delivering up to 256 simultaneous audio streams makes games and
applications come to life. With cutting-edge features and ABIT
Engineering, the NF7 series is the ultimate multimedia platform for
the world.

In other words, you shouldn't even be installing VIA drivers as this
board doesn't have a VIA chipset. I wouldn't be in the least bit
surprised that your having problems and I'm actually shocked that your
system boots....

My apologies, I posted this bad info thinking that it might help point you in
the direction to fix it. Here's the blurb I read, and again..sorry for the
false alarm.

After all kinds of issues wioth the 4.50 drivers that where pulled VIA did their
extreme best to fix the issue as soon as possible and they did. VIA just
released VIA Hyperion drivers version 4.51

VIA Hyperion drivers are suitable for any VIA chipset and all Microsoft Windows
Operating Systems. If you are looking for VIA 4in1 drivers, these are the
drivers you are looking for.

Fixed the issue of the Delayed Write Failed only for special condition .
Download VIA Hyperion 4in1 v4.51 (Added on 12/2/03)

They also send along this apology:

"We would like to sincerely apologize for any problems that people have
experienced with the Hyperion 4in1 4.50 drivers.

These drivers were removed from the download page on VIA Arena and from the VIA
Arena ftp, once we started receiving reports of the drivers causing problems.
These drivers were officially tested and certified by Microsoft and VIA to work
correctly and efficiently with Windows Operating systems that have Microsoft
certified drivers installed. After detailed investigation of the issues that
have been reported, we have found that they only occur with systems configured
with 1GB or more of memory and an ATI graphics card where the AGP aperture has
been set above 32MB.

We are currently working on a new revision of the driver that changes the
default size of the AGP aperture to 32MB.

Once again, we would like to offer our deepest apologies for this issue."

The OP did not say he did. Someone else suggested VIA drivers without
bothering to note what motherboard was being used! DUH!!!

Now cipher comes along just to add to the confusion assuming something that
isn't necessarily so. Of course we know what "assume" means! ;-))

Am not using Via 4 in 1 drivers. Will check if any are still lurking around.
Had switched from a Soyo Dragon MB many moons ago.
