anybody have problems with the latest 9 updates?

I have had to restore, deinstall, etc the latest updates a couple of times.
I think I narrowed it down to the IE update 867282. I have a legitemate
version of XP Pro (even checked it voluntarily at MS), have SP2 installed,
and keep up with the updates. For some reason, when I install one of the
updates, and I believe it is that one, upon restart I get an explorer error,
a report is generated, and I have to use the task manager to start processes
(thankfully I can start restore and/or add/remove from there!)
Interestingly, since Firefox is my default browser and Explorer cannot
start, Firefox comes up at the MS website and the screen reads that they
cannot figure out what the error is, but sometimes it can be that SP2 is not
installed... Click here to download and install SP2... RIGHT... like I am
going to install it a 2nd time!

I have had to remove more than just one of these updates before it would
restart and come up normally - if I choose the right date (on the first try)
I can usually do a restore. More than a couple of tries and I have to do
add/remove.

Any word on problems with the security updates?

My problem has been a major slow down of IE. I'm suspecting the KB867282 is
the prob too. Anyone know anything about a problem?
Thanks ....

$#@%&*^+! I thought I would go ahead and add in some of the other Security
updates one at a time and leave the KB867282 either totally out OR last.....
now my PC is ROYALLY $#@$%& up!

I added one other back that I'd deinstalled... no restart required... worked
fine.
Then added 888302 back (restarted) ... all worked fine.
THEN I added 890047 back. it required a restart too. .... NOT FINE!

I know I do not have the following installed:
891781 (I'd had to deinstall it yesterday to restore Explorer
functionality),
888113 (same)
KB867282

BUT NOW I get the following error:
winlogon.exe
The procedure entry point assocGetPerceivedType could not locate the
dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll
[OK]
The LogonUserInterface DLL msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your system
Administrator to replace the DLL or restore the original DLL
[RESTART]

I tried restarting two times... same problem.
I tried Safe Mode with Network... same problem.
I tried Safe Mode with Command Prompt... same problem.
I tried debugging... same problem.

HOW SHOULD I START IT and WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIND THE DLL to stick back
.... and where should it go in the windows directory?

I am stuck using an old Win98 box to post this!

Any help would be sincerely appreciated!

If anybody has a good suggestion before I end up putting in my XP CD and see
if it "repairs" the OS, please please post your suggestion! It fails to
load two dll's so winlogon.exe fails... even SAFE mode won't start.
Thanks!

Well. Ended up biting the bullet first and trying "Last Known Good..." wow,
MS actually fixed this up a bit so it doesn't go back to the "Install"
configuration...

I manually downloaded the last 4 security updates and may try to manually
install them while sending thenm to different "temp" file locations or
something... there were some similar problems with an earlier security
install and they suggested a fix similar to this (using the
WindowsXP-KB890047-X86-ENU.exe /T:C:\alternate_temp
right after the command-line Run statement. This makes it extract to an
"alternate temp directory". I don't have time to fiddle with it right now
though...

Geezus...another MS abortion of a security patch where the
problems caused by the patch are worse than the ones it's supposed
to "fix"...

Way to go...

Just restored my system for a similar problem. I had 14 updates though.

don't have SP2 and that's the problem?

You prob. did have SP2... that "SP2" message is just the default for
recommendations for unknown problems. I had the black screen thing... have
SP2, and now have all but 4 of the updates. Interestingly, I have updated
IE6 on my Win2000, win98SE, and a different WinXP Pro box and they all went
without a hitch. The other XP box did fine on the updates too. It seems to
be some unidentified incompatability..... AGGH. That is the curse of an
"open standard" system like the "IBM PC"/DOS/Microsoft legacy... but it also
gives us cheaper prices and much greater selection...
