Any workaround for Workstation Service.

Hello,

I have an application that depends on the 'workstation' service. If I remove
Client for MS Networks, then 'workstation' service disappears from Win XP or
W2k. I have a customer that is running a Novell network and will not install
Client for MS Networks since they are using the Novell client.
Does anyone know if Novell or Microsoft have a workaround for this ? I tried
install Clinet Services for Netware(CSNW) that is provided by Microsoft, but
still 'Workstation' service is missing.

Thanks,
Shahtech

First of all, the Client for MS Networks and the MS Client Services for
Novell Networks are entirely different things.

The client for MS Networks and the Novell client can co-exist, there may
be performance/reliability issues connecting to Novell shares and long
login times, but they can be largly corrected by setting preffered
provider order in advanced network properties. There are also some
registry changes that can be made that help in this regard, but I won't
go into them as they are situation specific.

DO_NOT_ use the MS Client Services for Netware Networks on a modern
Novell network, it does not fully support NDS or eDirectory properly and
you won't be able to change contexts. In other words, unless it is a
flat DS tree and the server object and user ojects are in the same
context you won't be able to login at all.

Additionally, before re-installing the Novell client you must manually
remove the MS Client Services for Novell networks; it has a bug that
prevents it from un-installing completely during the Novell Client
installation and you'll wind up with a botched up "hybrid" of the two.
If you have installed the Novell client without un-installing the MS
Client Services for Netware Networks follow this procedure to correct
the situation:

Un-install the Novell client, reboot.
Install the MS Client Services for Netware Networks, reboot.
Un-install the MS Client Services for Netware Networks, reboot.
Install the Novell client, reboot.
