AntiVir Personal Edition - Guard

I have started this AV program - the free edition Version 6. I would just
like to know if it is usual and normal for this program to examine 1600
files (for me) at each and every boot up. It slows boot-up time
considerably, especially if I also want to run Scandisk.
Why does it have to scan every time it boots-up? Surely it was doing its
job scanning for viruses up to when I closed the computer every night. How
would I get a virus during the night with the computer shut off?
Can it be configured to NOT do this without crippling the program entirely?

I have been using this and it does not scan on boot up.Look in the program
options to check off the scan at boot.

Thank you Joe. I have looked for such an option but I can't see one -
perhaps you could tell me where to find it or tell me what your settings
are. You can email me if you take out "atallspammedup" before the @ sign.

Further to the above....
I had one reply to my question which did not help me to locate the option
needed to turn off the scan at every boot-up. Does anyone know what I must
do - it is annoying to have to wait while Sygate does its thing. I see NO
place where I can turn it off (that is the scan but NOT the whole program)
unless worded in such a way as to be obscure. I know lots of you use Sygate
and that is why I post this request in here.

Try uninstalling & then installing it again. It shouldn't scan at boot
up, but it scans after you install it, so maybe there went something wrong
during the installation?

I use AntiVir Personal Edition AV and have never seen Sygate. I can
highly recommend AntiVir PE as a good freeware AV.

The updates are almost daily on signatures and very frequent in engine
updates. It is a small program using few resources that is very well
behaved on my machine. It does not scan on startup. I'm set to scan on
file reads and writes and I cannot even tell that the program is
running.

Two thumbs up!!

Well I just did uninstall and re-install. As before I have the little icon
in the tray near the clock and when you boot up if you are quick to open
that icon as soon as it appears, then I think you will find, like I do,
that there is a checking of files going on. NOT the whole hard drive but a
smaller list of files found in the GUARD section of Antivir. It must be
usual after all for the program to do this, but the question is WHY and also
why cannot the little scan be turned off somewhere?
Anyway thanks to all who replied.

The "AntiVir Guard" is an _on-access_ scanner, so it scans all files that
are _accessed_.

I recently tried AntiVir and while it is a good program as you say I
found that registering in order to get help from the AntiVir official
forums was surprisingly difficult.

There seem to be few other support resources.

All in all, I suspect that Avast is slightly better.

I stuck with AntiVir from AVG. I still haven't tried Avast, so I can't
say. I do think it's far better than AVG though.

I don't know which antivirus software you have so, I cannot
address that problem. Sygate is not an antivirus. It is a
very good firewall to replace the windows firewall. It is
also a good option among other firewalls. The only function
Sygate has is to control inbound/outbound communications of
your computer to the internet or a network. Sygate does not
examine files during bootup. It can only block or prevent
access to/from the machine.

From memory of when I have it installed, ISTR that AntiVir couldn't
scan pre-selected folders but maybe there was a way to do this.

Also it's messages can be are hard to resolve. I got the following

C:\WINDOWS ... zipinst.exe
[DETECTION] Contains signature of the PMS/PSWTool.MSN.102 program

but I couldn't find out anything about that particular virus which
AntiVir had identified.
I stuck with AntiVir from AVG. I still haven't tried Avast, so I
can't say. I do think it's far better than AVG though.

I too used to use AVG.
