Anti-Trojan type program

J

John Corliss

Since Antivirus programs may not do all that well in detecting
trojans, I started looking around for some kind of solutions. It seems
that all of the free anti-trojan software listed at the Wilder.org
site are either trialware, don't work with W9x or are abandoned (i.e.
useless), so I did a search in Alta Vista. What I came up with is the
following:

This is a page that talks about how to tell if you're being hacked:

http://www.markusjansson.net/ehacked.html

This is a utility mentioned at the above site:

http://www.capimonitor.nl/Atguard & NIS/_loadurl.php?filename=niscrc.php

(link may wrap)

However, I really can't find any good freeware anti-trojan software.
Has anybody else had any luck?

John,
It seems all we can do is wait for "a squared" to come out with their
new stuff:

A2 installes smoothly,... seems stable enough.
Compared to Ad Aware & Spybot it uses a lots of resources.
While Ad Aware can run - in the back - using low resources, A2
advances slowly and slows down my - very old - system.

But certainly it'll run smoothly on any newer configuration.

Anyone with experience using A2 compared to Ad Aware & Spybot?

Yes. It's just as you say.

Be warned that they're a completely different genre of software. Ad-Aware
and Spybot are anti-spyware, a² is an anti-trojan. You need both.

I downloaded and installed a² yesterday. Be advised that you need to
register with them to get the activation code. Other than that, the
program works nicely and gave me a clean bill of health.

However, I still notice that after I run a certain binary news reader
and shut it down, my system slows and also shuts down very slowly.
That's what prompted me to get a². I'd get a packet sniffer, but what
a pain in the arse.

No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware, demoware,
nagware, shareware, spyware, time-limited software, trialware, viruses
or warez please.

Registration is no problem as long as they do not abuse.

Similar, runs and finds nothing.
What is good I suppose ;-)

Will keep it along with Ad Aware & Spybot

I tried it.

It really does work, but it's a pain. The scanning engine is slow, and it
has ads, ads, ads that pop up and make you decline to get a full version or
something.

It's better than nothing, and worth it if it's all you can get.

I agree. And I gave them my spam dump address anyway.

Perhaps A² at http://www.emsisoft.com/en/

Some of the web-based scanners work too, but they're a minor hassle.

There's another one http://www.ewido.de/de/?section=news&id=13 about the
same level of development as A².

It requires you to register and the interface is in German only so far I
think.

Here's a comparison of the different pro and free versions

For Xp and win2k only.
