Another SATA Question - No problem

Jack Gillis

Earlier, I asked about my two SATA drives appearing connected to an IDE
Controller and also in the 'Safely Remove Hardware' list in the taskbar.
Both Bob I and DL responded helpfully and I appreciate that.

Another question about the subject. If I inadvertently remove the second
drive (not the System one) by clicking on the drive in the 'Safely Remove
Hardware' list, is there a way to remount it other than rebooting or taking
the cover off and unplugging then replugging the drive? I'm not even sure
the latter will work. Perhaps there is something like a remount command
within the system.

Thank you very much.

There are disk mounting trays that you can buy so the drive can be
pulled straight out the front. They have been around for years long
before hotswap, solely for the purpose of hardware changes while power
was off. Granted they were IDE types. With the onset of possible
hotswap SATA drives, these might work for your case if you want to
pursue it. (I say possible only because so much depends on hardware
and drives and OS to support all this).

But if you mean "inadvertently" in all sincerity, then bite the bullet
and reboot, "oops you goofed", you're human, just reboot.

But if you want to do this regularly, then try. Like:

Jack:
We'll assume that your system and the secondary SATA HDD supports
"hot-pluggable" ("hot-swappable") capability. In virtually every case where
we're dealing with a SATA-II HDD and the motherboard supports that 3Gb/s
SATA-II data interface, that capability is present.

I'm also assuming that the secondary SATA HDD in question has been connected
to the system via a SATA connection, either directly to a motherboard's SATA
connector or to an eSATA port on the computer case. Is that so or is the
SATA HDD connected via a USB connection?

Assuming a SATA-to-SATA connection, certain motherboards (usually) with
NVIDIA chipsets identify a SATA HDD as a "hot-pluggable" device and provide
the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the notification tray. To the best of
my knowledge you cannot disconnect a SATA-connected HDD through the SRH
icon. Have you actually been able to do so? Since you mention "taking the
cover off" I'm not clear as to whether the SATA HDD is connected to the
system via an external enclosure; or are you referring to the computer case
"cover"?

Whether the system will *automatically* recognize (detect) the secondary
SATA HDD after it is disconnected and subsequently reconnected depends upon
the motherboard. Some do - some don't. But in any event should the system
*not* detect the HDD after it is reconnected you can access Device Manager,
right-click on the "Disk drives" listing and then invoke the "Scan for
hardware changes" item from the sub-menu. The HDD should then be recognized.

Sorry I didn't mention that. Both SATA's are connected to the SATA
connections on the motherboard.

Yes, I did remove the non-sysetem drive through the SRH icon. Not
intentionally though :) So I was refering to the computer case cover.

OK, I did it again. Purposefully this time. Device Manager/Scan for
hardware changes did not reinstall it but Device Manager/Properties said
that it was marked for removing. So it is reboot time.

Anyway, it is no big deal, not even a small one. I was just curious about
it but my curiosity is now dormant.

Thanks for taking the time to reply

My meds have to be adjusted! lol.
I don't remember the conversation, but 2 months ago is a long time, as
things go. But it does look a bit off topic, thanks.

Have a good one.
