Another one bites the dust!

One more maxtor down the tubes. This is getting completely ridiculous.
This is my 4th failed 6L080L4 within the period of one year. Rather
than a progressive influx of bad sectors, this one wasn't able to be
predicted by SMART monitoring. I was watching TV with my PVR and
poof... the drive is dead.

Luckily(?) this one failed within 30 days, so technically Maxtor should
give me a new drive in replacement. Since the 6L080L4 line is
discontinued, hopefully I'll get a model that isn't faulty.

If you've failed four drives in the same machine in a year then look for
a problem with the machine, not the drives. Most likely either the
power supply is too small or broken in some way or the drives are not
getting enough cooling.

Two different machines, with adequate cooling. (never exceeded 40C
according to DTemp). I purchased my original Maxtor less than one year
ago. Each one that I've owned since then has been a (used) replacement
that they've sent me.

My main machine currently has 2 Seagate drives in it, and had an IBM 20G
which I replaced due to capacity. (all of which are 7200RPM, like the
Maxtor). Same PSU, same cooling characteristics.

Since my original Maxtor failed and I got an RMA replacement, I've moved
it into a different machine. (one that's not "mission critical").

I realize that I only have a tiny sample, but the drives that I've owned
have all been exposed to the same environment. The maxtors have failed;
the other brands have not. That's enough to convince me...

Maybe your system is killing them. Power supply perhaps.

Try a different brand. I have been using Western Digital for over 10 years.
Not a single problem yet. My latest is one with an 8 MB cache.

Yeah. I have no problems with other brands. The only reason I still
have a Maxtor is because they keep replacing it under warranty.

If this next one dies too, I guess I'll just cut my losses and switch
over to something that works.

Hi,
oops that's bad news! hopefully you didn't lose any vital data etc. . . .I
wouldn't go near Maxtor drives right now, others have had better luck, but
for me over the past 5 years the most problems I seen with hard-disks have
been Maxtor branded!

Western-Digital is doing it for me right now. . .

I've had 3 Maxtor 6L080J4 80GB in 24x7 operation for over a year with
no problems, ok but these are the "J" and not "L". However, that
said, I did previously return one over a year ago for a SMART spinup
error, plus 2-3yrs ago returned 3 more for bearing whine (jet engine
sound). And, so far for the 6 months I've had them my 2 DiamondMax
Plus 9 6Y200P0 200GB have had no problems (but I also have extra fans
in the drive bays).

After returning the 3 80GB drives for the bearing whine I almost
switched to WD, but I'm still hoping the fluid bearings in the 6Y200P0
have addressed this issue, so far so good, and I have so much faith in
them I've even ordered 1 more.
