another missing dll

Hi again, seems that the person that I was trying to help neglected to tell
me about the OTHER dll message that was popping up.

"The Logon User Interface DLL Msgina.dll failed to load. Contact your system
administrator to replace DLL or restore the original DLL. "

I found answers to that problem, but how do I get the computer to boot up? I
have tried Last Known good Configuration and all of the other boot options.
The above message comes up for all of them. Even booting from the cd does
not work. How can I follow the fix instructions and create an alternate_temp
folder so the computer starts?

Thanks again

Boot into Command Console mode, then restore the file from
your Win2000 CD.

The string of missing files suggest an underlying problem, e.g.
some virus infection, hacker intrusion or malware program.
Unless you fix the underlying problem, you're likely to run
around in circles, replacing missing files left, right and centre.

Hi Pegasus, the next questions is how to boot into command console mode. I
booted from the cd, and tried to boot from the hard drive. Sometimes the
shell32.dll error message would not show up, but the msgina.dll message
showed up everytime. according to the knowledge base I can fix that by
following the instructions, but the first step is getting the computer to
boot.

this is giving me wrinkles and grey hair, and i really do not need more.

1. Set your BIOS to boot from the CD.
2. Boot from your Win2000 CD.
3. Select Repair when prompted.
4. Select "Recovery Consolde" when prompted.

I did that. I set the bios to boot from the cd, set the second boot device
to cd and left the third device disabled. I put the win2k disk in and turned
the computer on. There was a line on the boot screen that said booting from
atapi cdrom. it went from the boot screen to the splash screen for windows
2000 then to the blank blue background and i got one or both of the missing
dll messages. this was not the blue screen of death, just the blue screen
before the desktop picture loads. if there is no way around this how about
this: install a second hard drive that has windows 2000 on it, set it to
master and then fix the original hard drive?

What you describe suggests that the machine continues
to boot from the hard disk. It does not boot from the CD.
Here are a couple of options:

a) Run Win2000 off your second hard disk, as you suggested.

b) Make a set of Recovery Console diskettes like so:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Log on to the Windows 2000 CD
- cd \bootdisk
- makeboot.exe a:.
- Boot your machine from these disks
- Select R for Repair
- Select C for Command Console
- Enter the administrator's password

I would be most concerned if I was unable to boot my PC
from my cd drive. It suggests a problem with your Win2000
CD, your CD drive, your motherboard or your BIOS.

Some machines (eg Compaq/HP) require that you hit a key to boot from
the CD. There is a prompt. Are you sure that you saved the BIOS
information before you exitted the BIOS?

Cheers,

yes. this is a custom built machine. phoenix bios, f10 to save and exit.
there is no key and no prompt at boot to choose where to boot from.
