another hanging startup

As many people seem to have startup problems hope this
isn't too redundant- Win XP Pro sp-1 on home built
machine clean install worked fine with all same hardware
hp 722 parallal printer and canon n676u usb scanner ATI
128 all in wonder video. suddenly now have start up
seems normal- get to desktop, task bar hides, but can't
start dial up connection till like 3 minutes passes and
floppy light lights, scanner is found and lights/grinds
then allis freed up and dial up pops ups ready to go.
Oathe apps will work ATI tv guide listings/win explorer/
word etc, but not EZ cd creator for instance. Seems to be
anything needing a port--what could windows be doing all
that time? Didn't install anything but updates along the
way. Have norton antivirus 2003 pro--took out thinking
liveupdate blocking. also uninstalled scanner-unplugged
etc. could this be an issue I heard about with parallal
port printers vs usb? WD 80gig HD on esc motherboard-
sorry don't have model--AMD 2200 xp+ Thanks KK

parallel printers do have issues in winxp:

try disconnecting it and see if problems clear up.

thanks Dave--but I actually did disconnect and uninstall
the printer --didn't do any different on start up. Can't
figure what is tying up the ports in general in that 3
minutes--everything works fine after it all comes back. KK
