I have a wireless adapter in my laptop. I have it configured to show the
network icon in the notification area. Every few minutes, I get this
annoying popup from the network icon that shows the status of the wireless
connection. How do I get rid of the annoying popup window that comes up?

That's a function on the driver. You didn't mention the brand of wireless card, but there may be a setting to stop the popups OR it may be that the popup occurs whenever there's a change in the wireless network and you have something triggering the popup. I had that problem when my next door neighbor set up a wireless network and I would occasionally have my access point detect the other network. It also happens sometime when I'm in a hotel that has wireless Internet access and the wireless card detects it.
