Annoying flubs in IE 6/Win 2k Pro

Hello,

This is my work computer. I don't have the option of reinstalling the O/S,
but since this machine was last ghosted a couple of months ago, I've been
experiencing the following annoying little glitches with IE 6:

1. If I select an item from the Favourites menu, and I have more than one IE
window open, the favourite website opens in one of the other IE windows
instead of in the one I'm selecting the Favourite in. This doesn't happen if
I use the Favourites BUTTON instead.

2. I'm always getting annoying Script Errors of different kinds, on pages
that cause no problems on other computers on this network which are using the
same versions of IE and Win, and on my home computer (XP pro/IE 6). I've
already tried downloading the latest version of the Script Engine, it doesn't
help.

3. I can't use the latest version of Sun JRE on this machine. If I try to
enable it in Internet Options, I can't load Java-run sites or applets, I get
"page cannot be displayed". I'm still having to use the old JVM that came
with this machine, which means not all Java sites run correctly.

I've already tried deleting cookies, temp files, and exporting/importing
favourites. No luck. I also tried a "dirty install" of IE 6 again since
there's no option to uninstall it.

Anyone got any suggestions? BTW I've got all the MS security updates etc on
this machine.

Thanx...

Open IE, click Tools, click Options, click Advanced, untick the reuse
windows when launching shortcuts.

What happens if you tell it (in the same section) to stop warning about
script errors? Do things run normal then?

Hmm... No clue on this one but you might find an older version that will
work? Have you tried that yet?

Hi Galen,

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check my Advanced options settings when
I'm back at work tomorrow, to see if they work.

Re the script errors, I don't think it's a security settings issue, as often
if I click the option to view the page despite the error, it doesn't load
correctly and I have to close/reopen the browser, but again I will try your
suggestion.

Re the JRE, unfortunately at my work I am forced to use secure sites whose
security applet runs on Java, and this applet is rather picky about Java
version. It won't allow me to log in with earlier versions of Java (yes I'm
familiar with all the legacy downloads available through the Sun site). It
lets my customers and colleagues in with the latest Java Runtime, but my
system won't load many Java applets on other pages with this newest version
of Java in place. Right now it seems to run OK with the latest JRE installed
but unchecked in the Advanced options.

My current workaround for most of the little annoying problems is using
Firefox. I do use some sites that won't run with Firefox, but I've got an
extension that automatically switches sites that won't work with Firefox, to
IE.

Regards,

Catti

At least at this point you have a work around. As for the latest of Sun's
Java I've found it to be very problematic here and don't really like it. I
leave it installed only because there may come a time at which I need it.
I've had it stop page loads and if it's left to it's own devices with a page
open that Java on it it won't close via right click context menu and after a
couple of hours is eating more CPU clock cycles than it should be able to.
This is on one PC. On another system it seems to run fine and both have
nearly identical setups. For what it's worth I'm not really sure what the
problem is and can't explain it but I suspect that (I know I've filed a bug
report) there will be a newer version soon.
