Since this seems like a "legit" post I thought I'd just post a short reply.

There has been enough spam on this newsgroup lately that the threshold
for people to filter out any and all "off-topic" posts is starting to
get very low. Off topic meaning anything not directly pertaining to
discussing C#.

While ModelMaker is probably useful to a vast group of C# programmer, it
is no less an ad for a commercial product, and if everybody that sold
such products (ie. ones related to C# and programming) should start
advertising in this group, then I'd imagine the masks in the filter nets
would start to get very wide. There is a reason most people frown upon
op-out advertising and this is actually no different.

As such, please refrain from posting ads like this to this group, or
risk being filtered out permanently by a large group of inhabitants.

I also noticed that you crossposted the post to several different
newsgroups, something which is also typically frowned upon. I replied
only to the newsgroup where I saw the post, mpdl.csharp.

Where do you suggest to post this kind of announcements if yo udo not want them here?

Yes, as I was advised by what seem to be leading users in these newsgroups a few years ago.

I'd suggest you use the typical route of posting it on your website, and
using a mailing list that people can subscribe to.

Please note that I in no way intended to be rude with you, it was just a
kind hint that the threshold here the past weeks have gotten very low,
so any kind of things that just *look* like spam end up being filtered
out by very many right now.
Yes, as I was advised by what seem to be leading users in these newsgroups a few years ago.

Well, common usenet netiquette typically mention crossposting as
something that should be avoided if possible:

For guidelines:

* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netiquette
* http://www.newsreaders.com/guide/netiquette.html

Note that the netiquette typically also says that if a message belongs
in multiple groups, it is better to cross post, and I fully support
that. But again, people are getting edgy here these days due to the
amount of spam trickling in, which is why I mentioned it. I was probably
a bit too vague, but anyway...

There are two internet addresses which list third party tools for .NET,
maybe ModelMaker can be added there:

http://www.it-visions.de/dotnet/produkte/tools.aspx
http://www.hanselman.com/blog/Scott...DeveloperAndPowerUsersToolListForWindows.aspx

There are only these two places, and no newsgroup for 'third party
tools' (including announcements)? Well, it is still a new platform /
language ;-)

Best Regards

I hate spam as much as the next person, but whining about off-topic
posts is.... also off topic ;), so you're also not in line with the
charter of this group

I.o.w.: if you don't want to see some posts, add a filter to your
newsreader. E.g. add 'ANN' as a headline filter and you won't see the
announcements.

A classic Usenet debate. Suffice to say, plenty of people find that
it makes more sense to comment on off-topic posts in an effort to
mitigate future off-topic posts.

In my experience, the strategy works and, conversely, ignoring
off-topic posts doesn't (i.e. the number simple increases as
off-topic posters get bolder).

In fact, in any free and open society, it's important to be able to
have a debate about the behavior within that society, otherwise bad
behavior is perceived as tolerated and only increases over time.
Inasmuch as each newsgroup is a tiny microcosm of society, those
same rules apply here.

Sure, but isn't it so that 'offtopic' is somewhat subjective? I mean,
this is a C# newsgroup but most posts are about .NET related stuff, not
about C# related stuff. No problem with that though, but if nittpicking
kicks in, there's no end ;)

Offtopic posts are a given in newsgroups, and to me ignoring them
still works, or filtering them out. What I don't see is how commenting
on offtopic posts would cause less offtopic posts. First of all, the
reply on an offtopic post is offtopic, and the person posting the
original offtopic-post is likely aware of it or doesn't care. In the
almost 20 years I'm posting to usenet now I haven't seen many people
who weren't aware of their offtopic posting behavior. I.o.w.: offtopic
posts will keep on coming in, there's nothing you can do about it
unless moderators are installed (which sucks for other reasons)

The biggest irony of all is always the post with a reference to the
dreaded 'netiquette' RFC in a reply to an offtopic post (which is thus
also offtopic, violating the RFC ;))
