Animated GIF

I'm trying to insert an animated GIF into a PowerPoint XP.

When I go to Insert, Movie File..., the GIF extension is not listed. So, I
go to All Files and select the desired animated GIF file. When it tries to
load, the following error message is displayed: "PowerPoint couldn't insert
a movie from the selected file. Either the file is non-standard, or
QuickTime is not installed properly."

Next, I run mplay32.exe and try to run it there. It gives me the message
"Cannot determine the device type from the given filename extension."

So, just for fun, I convert the animated GIF to an AVI and tried to run it
in mplay32.exe. This results in the error message "There is no driver
installed on your system". Obviously something is screwed up if I can't run
an AVI.

So next, I go to Austin Myers' tutorial at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm#Operating
and confirm that my Media Player registry settings are correct (I'm running
on XP) and they are.

Next, I try to reinstall Media Player by going to Add or Remove Programs,
Windows Components, but I don't see Media Player listed anywhere. So now,
I'm stuck. Do I have to reinstall Windows to fix this "driver" issue? Any
ideas?

Thanks!

I just go to File - Insert - Browse to file you want to
use and - Voila! It only animates from Slideshow View.

Keith, Cynthia's right -- you just need to use Insert/Picture/From File
for GIFs. It's not terribly intuitive, is it? But GIFs aren't really
*movies*, so...

Thanks for the help. Your approach worked, although it wasn't obvious. In
fact, the procedure according to PowerPoint Help is to use Insert, Movie
File. Go figure...
