Animated Bullet List

In PowerPoint 2007:

I want to create a bulleted list and have each bullet appear on click. I
can have them fade in one by one automatically but don't see any way to make
them appear on command (click).

I have read two different FAQs about this (echosvoice and PPTools) but I am
missing a critical step somewhere because it just isn't happening. The
only mouse icon in the Custom Animation task pane is at the top (Start) and I
just don't seem to be able to apply it to individual bullets. What am I
doing wrong?

Thank you.

Don't forget to click the downward-pointing chevron in the animation task
pane to expand the contents of the bulleted list. This is what lets you
apply different animations to the different "lines" of text.

Is this one of the tutorials you read? It has a screenshot showing the
chevron (with the tooltip, "click to expand contents").

Once you can access each line of text, you can select it in the animation
pane and change its "Start" setting to "on click" at the top of the pane.
