An alternative simple uninstaller.

Nev.

I am a novice user of XP.
But I guess the basics of XP will be similar to 98.

An acquaintance asked me to look at problems on her computer.
She is using Win 98, and knows very little about it.
And says other people have made alterations to it.
And doesn't really know what is on the computer.
And doesn't understand folders (or directories.)
Ahhhhh.......

When I go into "add/remove" to try and remove clutter and
clean up the computer, I find there are no programs listed there
as being available to be uninstalled. What is another simple
method for uninstalling unnecessary programs.

Upon starting her computer she receives a message that there
too many windows open and she needs to shut some down.
She says she hasn't even had time to open any!!

Can anyone offer some simple ideas on where to start?

Nev.

TIA

(I am about to suggest they do a simple course on Windows.
They might even get it for free.)

I suggest you go to a windows '98 NG and look for answers.
The basics aren't the same at all. Keep smiling.

What is another simple method for uninstalling unnecessary programs.
Since you've done the Remove Programs bit look for any that provide an
uninstall in the menu list then try the cleanup files utility in
Accessories/System Tools finally, use a third party cleanup program - your
personal choice.

Upon starting her computer she receives a message that there too many
windows open and she needs to shut some down.
Could be caused by pagefile.sys size being too small for the system. In
general, MS likes 1.5 times the total RAM of the system. If others have
tweaked her system they may have set this too low. You'll need to check it
out.
