AMD Athlon XP 1500+

Hi,

My computer works with an "AMD Athlon XP 1500+" with Windows 98. I have
no problem. I would like to install Windows 2000. The computer doesn't
want to install the OS.

I boot on CD, then on a blue screen, the computer "install" driver,
dll,.... Then the blue screen change to a black screen and I always stay
on this black screen

I change the processor and the black screen stay a few seconds and
continue the installation.

I don't understand : my processor works very well with win98 and why it
doesnt't want to install win 2000 ?

Any suggestions

I've installed win2k on athlon 1500+ processors before, no problem.
However, the issue MIGHT be a motherboard issue. Look at the capacitors
(little soda cans) if any are bulging or leaking, your motherboard is
bad.

Check on a bios update for your board, even if bios is not
the problem, there may be advantages in a newer bios that
better supports Win2k/XP power management features.

Before trying to update bios, test the memory with
memtest86+, let that run overnight to be sure system is
stable enough that a bios flash isn't much risk.

I'm not going to, because the exact details of what is
happening are key to finding the solution.

Then when?
We need to know exactly what you see, remember we can't see
your monitor screen.

If all else fails, check the usual things like temps and
voltages, cables and cards, fans, etc.

I change only the memory : same result
I change only the processor : no problem
I change everything else : same result
All capacitors seem good on the motherboard

So, I suppose I have a problem with my processor. Something inside it,
stop the installation... But I don't understand why my processor works
very well with WIN98

Is your Win2k CD (the actual media) from Microsoft?

Maybe a heat problem. How hot is the processor? If the heatsink is
painfully hot to the touch, you'll have to upgrade the cooling.
