I understood the comment as meaning that the maximum standard bus speed
only handles DDR-400. Overclocking can increase that speed.

Unless the system you're using is overclocked, its probably not using
the full available bandwidth of the DDR-550 memory.

Actually there's a setting in the BIOS to select the memory type and
according to benchmarks with Sandra it's being utilized as 550.

Your BIOS cannot allow data faster than the bus speed. Sandra is reporting
the data encoded in the SPD controller chips on the RAM sticks.

Your RAM *IS NOT* operating at 550.

Where do you get your ideas from?. The BIOS most certainly can allow
memory speeds faster the 200MHz DDR. Technically its overclocking because
the spec on the Athlon 64 specifies a maximum memory bus speed of 200MHz,
however it's possible to run the bus faster than that just as it's
possible to run the core clock at a higher frequency then then the part is
speced for. The BIOS in a Dell probably won't allow you to do this but the
BIOSes in the motherboards that are used in most whitebox machines having
lots of overclocking capabilities.

A little off topic but funny.

They haven't forgotten the humble spy microphone.

Don't forget your Mic kill switch.

Taking advantage of the P965 motherboard's support for noise
cancellation technology, ASUS bundles an array microphone with the
P5B Deluxe. An array microphone with noise cancellation technology
can significantly reduce the background noise and focus more
specifically on the person speaking, especially useful for speaking
in a noisy environment.

The OP stated specifically that he did not overclock, that he did not change
any timings or voltages.

He claims that merely placing the RAM into the slots gets him to 550...and
his support of that claim was Sandra, which is highly inaccurate in that
regard.

Please review the entire thread if you have any additional questions.

I bought the DDR 550 at the time because the price was right for me and was
listed as compatable with my MB. My MB (Abit AN8 32X) set everything
automatically.
