Am I going mad? (AVG serial number problem)

I'm in the process of debugging my sister's laptop and I'm running a variety
of AV packages on it.

I've run Avast & AntiVir but I'd like to run the free AVG as well. The
problem is that when I go to download it, it downloads! I *don't* get any
requests for my e-mail address etc. so consequently I don't get the usual
email with the serial numer.

Without the serial number I can't install it. I do have an old serial
number but it doesn't work. I've looked and looked everywhere on the AVG
site for somewhere to request a serial number for the free version but
there's nothing.

Have they changed something on the site?

Avg free doesnt need a serial number, only the older version based on avg6
needed a serial.

After the agreeing to all the terms and conditions etc. it requests a serial
number. Without one the installation goes no further.

You must be installing a different version to everyone else then
because AVG Free definitely does *NOT* require you to enter a
serial number.

Then please *read* my reply, free avg does not at any point ask for a serial
number, that is why avg do not need you to register.
I have installed avg on hundreds of machines.
Is it possible you have downloaded avg7, not avgfree? The website makes it
quite tricky to locate the free version, bumping you to a different website

Well b*gger me! Why the heck couldn't I find that version? I think my
mistake was just to google for AVG which takes you to the US site which
seems to hide its link to the free AVG pretty well.

Having downloaded the wrong version, I didn't spot when I stumbled across
the free version the difference in the file names.

Make sure you don't have any stray setup programs from earlier installs
lying around. It is always best to use a newly created and empty
directory when extracting a new "setup.exe" file.

Well if you ARE going mad, you've got company because I went through exactly
the same experience when I downloaded AVG Free. I ended up getting it from
elsewhere because I couldn't for the life of me find it on the official
site.
