Am I Adequately Protected?

P

Paul McDonald

Hello,

I am running XP Service Pack 2.

I have:

Kaspersky Antivirus (3 hourly updates and full scan weekly)
Kaspersky Firewall + Router Firewall

Microsoft Antispyware (daily updates and full scan weekly)
Ad-aware (Full Scan Weekly)

I'm not worried about antispam.

A friend told me I should get another antispyware as the windows an
ad-aware products alone are not enough. Are they???

I could get spybot, but as it has a real time function, would thi
conflict with windows antispyware?

Is there another spyware product that searches for different things t
the two I have already?

I appreciate anyones advice here and have a great day! :D

I think your computer is just fine the way it is. Couple the software
protection with a user practicing "Safe Hex" and you shouldn't have any
problems - http://www.claymania.com/safe-hex.html

You are protected, but you can download the MaAfee Stinger and the MS
RegClain that are very good too.

I also think you are adequately protected.:)

I also use Ad-Aware and MS Antipsyware only and I find them for very very
good.
MS Antispyware can do things that no other could (especially in real-time
protection). Ad-Aware SE is user-friendly and easy to use.
You really do not need SpyBot S&D

Just do these things:

1.Open Security Center in Control Panel and check the security status
2.Check the status of your Antispyware programs
3.Because Windows XP SP 2 has buit in firewall and you have Kaspersky's
firewall, make sure that you have only 1 of them ENABLED.
I PERSONALLY prefer Windows Firewall but the choice is yours. :)
Use only ONE firewall to prevent conflicts !
3.1 Make sure your hardware Router works

4.Goto
Start->Settings->Contol Panel->Internet Options
to ensure these additional Internet settings

On the General tab - delete all temporary internet files, cookies, history
( often do this)
On the Security tab - make sure the Internet level is Medium.Check
other levels.
On the Privacy tab - make sure the level is Medium High.
On the Content tab ,goto Auto complete - Delete(clear) forms and
passwords and check the settings

5.Make sure you have set Kaspersky's real-time protection to Maximum level
6.Practice safe-hex ,or in simple words, just be careful what you do,which
pages you open,what you install...

Good luck !

If you use FireFox browser and something other than Outlook Express or
Outlook for email, you are already about as safe as you can be without
doing much more.

Your "Router Firewall" may not really be a firewall - what vendor/model
is it?

If you don't do things like running Music Swapping software, don't use
Instant Messgener applications, don't browse questionable sites, then
you don't have a real large threat base.

Download FireFox, use a non-MS email client, stay on "good" sites,
install WallWatcher to show the inbound/outbound traffic from your
Internet connection (and monitor it frequently).....

In Paul McDonald <[email protected]> had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Paul.

Here's a wonderful addition to cover some other forms of malware with KAV.

Open it from the notification area of the system tray, click on settings
tab, click on the update configuration, in the drop down menu box select the
extended database files and you'll get loads of additional coverage.

Are you taking other precautions such as not running with admin rights,
changing browser security settings to keep things tight, downloading patches
on a regular basis?

I do those things rather than run lots of weird and wonderful utilities, and
I appear to suffer much less problems than a lot of people who post here
with a 10 page list of virus and spyware protection software that something
just blasted past and screwed up their computer.

Don't log in as admin all the time. That would go a long way in protecting
your data.
