I bought a template that is a map of the united states from awesome
backgrounds.com. I am giving a presentation and throughout this
presentation, periodically I want to ask the people in my session, "How many
people are from CA, from WA, TX, etc, I want to click on those states, want
the fill to change color and stay that color, then I want to advance through
a few more slides, then want to stop and ask again, OK is anyone from MN, MI,
WI etc, click on those states if they are represented and them stay a
different fill color, the whole point is that at the end of my presentation,
I want to see how many states are represented in my session. I am PPT
challenged and would appreciate any help someone can offer.

This is not going to be that easy!!

First I guess the map is on the master slide, you will have to copy / paste
it on to the actual slide(s) (you might want to go to format > background and
omit master graphics for that slide only)
Next select the state (assuming you can) and slide show > custom animation >
emphasis > change fill color
Next double click the entry in the list and in timing tab set a trigger
(start effect on click of .... - the state)

Hope that makes sense

Kim,

Unfortunately I don't think what you are trying to achieve is possible.

It's easy to get individual states to change color (if you are using
powerpoint 2002 (aka xp) or 2003).
What is not easy is to have powerpoint remember what changed color, when you
move on to the next slide.

It would be possible using something called VBA (i guess) - (a programming
language - for powerpoint.)

see
How do I use VBA code in PowerPoint?
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00033.htm
It's a steep learning curve.

I'm sorry that I cannot suggest an easy way.

Subject: Instructions

I purchased some templates from you back in January or February. They were
maps, the one I'm going to use in my presentation is the one of the United
States. I want to ask people in my session, for example "who here is from
CA, TX, WA?? I want to click on those states and the fill color change and
stay that color, want to continue with a few more of my slides, then I want
the map to show again, want to ask again, for example, is any one from FL,
MN, WI etc, then continue on. I do not know how to get this to work. Are you
able to help me, do you have suggestions for me?

Your timely response is appreciated.
