"always create backup copy" does not remain unchecked

In Tools - Options - I uncheck the "always create backup
copy" box. When I close Word and reopen it, the box is
checked again.

Any suggestion

It's trying to protect you from yourself
Though more likely this is a sign of registry corruption see
