Buy a large felt tip pen, cross out the word "Monkey" on the box and
write "Penguin" :)

Glad you found something to (almost) match the seriousness of your
collection, and there's probably more chance of things getting on the
"Wish" list if you make suggestions.

Michael,

I'm really impressed by it as well. I updated my reply to Tim by adding:

"I'm backing off my previous reply a little after a morning's research
into the Media Monkey Forums and downloading the latest Beta of V3. a)
The multiple artists are no longer concatenated into an additional
artist b) The indexing I want is in the "wish list" c) Apparently V3
will "make nice" with WINE (not perfect but better than nothing)"

Paying the extra for the Gold version is not a problem. (a rounding
error in what my setup has cost!)
It'll be somewhat strange that the best Linux solution I can find is a
paid-for emulated Windows application!

So why don't you just stick with windows then? Your condescending
attitude isn't needed in the Linux community.

Wow, I never expected that from you, Stephan.

Fortunately your attitude as displayed in this post is not the enduring one
I expect from the Linux community as it starts to become mainstream.
I explained the "why?" earlier.
You've decided to adopt the usual "If it's not available in Linux, nobody
should need it!" attitude of current Linux afficionados that lasts just
until the function is 'discovered' in the latest release of their favorite
distro.
It's similar to the prevailing "Fakeraid" pseudo putdown.
Fine! Have a nice day!

Well it is a little unusual for me, I give ya that. But honestly, he's
hitting a nerve with me. I'm always happy to provide help to whomever I
can. But honestly, if I go by his statements regarding Linux, if that is
how he feels, then seriously...why does he bother?

If he came into any linux related forum with statements like the one
above then most would chew him up alive, I'm still being harmless.

But hey, here is a list of all the media players available for Ubuntu.

*IF* any of that meets his needs or not, I honestly don't know.

Nope that's not my attitude. I honestly couldn't tell you if there is
something out there that does what you want. I wouldn't even know that
windows media player does it. If there is a feature that's lacking, I
generally hope that it'll be added...not that nobody should need it.

I just simply don't like your attitude. For one, why are you even looking
for help regarding Linux in a Windows newsgroup?

Why don't you take your questions over to alt.os.linux.ubuntu? There are
far more people there who are capable of helping you than in a Vista NG.

If you do however, I do suggest that you refrain from statements such as
"It'll be somewhat strange that the best Linux solution I can find is a
paid-for emulated Windows application!". Statement's like that are about
as polite as you knocking at my door and then throwing a pile of steaming
dog shit into my doorway as I open the door. And you're going to get
treated accordingly for making them.

If you've looked at my response to Michael's post, you'll see I've posted
a link with various media players available for you.

If any of those meet your needs and how well they do, I honestly can't
tell you. I don't know over half the players on that list.

I understand your point, mostly. However, this isn't a Linux forum.
It may seem that way at times, but your a smart enough fellow to
know that it is not.

Your comment really sounded like some Windows fanatics around here,
at least they could really say to a Linux user- that this is a Vista forum
stop your condescending and bashing posts on Windows.
Of course, that doesn't stop them from berating Microsoft/Windows/Vista.
As much as some of the Microsoft apologists around here are quite
trifling, I find much of the same attitude in many Linux fanatics.
You know, fanatics of all types really suck.

Take care,

Michael

James,
Thanks for the recommendation. I downloaded and installed it but unless I
missed something there doesn't seem to be any library management functions
at all. Now the web site (Hungary?) talks about MUI as a front end. Was
there Some combination you thought would satisfy the library requirements I
stated?

Well had he not asked for help regarding Ubuntu/Linux I would have never
made that comment. If someone in this newsgroup makes a condescending
comment regarding Linux I don't care. I ignore and don't even bother
responding.

But if he *asks* for help and I try to offer any information I can, and
then makes such a comment...then I get annoyed...that really was the only
reason.

Agree with ya on the fanatics. =)

And now I'm backs off my prior backing off!
Admittedly.it was Beta on Beta, but having tried Media Monkey V3
on Ubuntu, it does not bode well for "making nice" with WINE

Stephan,

0.9.45 apparently. There were pointers to other versions, but the hint was
that they were less tested on Ubuntu. Mind you, the pointers were in a 7.04
readme, though I was on 7.10 Beta. Do you think there's upgrades relatedto
audio in other versions?
I'm not even sure it was audio related.

Try 0.9.46 then, it's the latest.

You can get it from www.winehq.org

Follow the instructions on the site to add the wine repository to your
sources and then check for updates again and the new version will
automatically download.

The Official Ubuntu repositories are always behind when it comes to Wine
because Wine is on an extremely fast release schedule. Generally a new
version every 2 weeks.

So it's not a bad idea to use the offical wine repository instead to keep
wine up to date.

Also another thing, google for wine-doors, it's not part of the
repositories though so you'll have to download it from their website.

It's very useful for configuring wine and installing things into Wine to
make other programs work.

For instance, not all programs (if they need it) bundle MFC42 with them,
so Wine-doors has the ability to automatically install MFC40 (that
includes MFC42) for you.

I'm not sure what happened to my reply to you yesterday-maybe lost in
the ether! Anyway after several attempts I'm trying Thunderbird...

OK - I followed the link you gave me and followed the ubuntu//Debian
directions. Although there is an indication that 0.9.46 exists, it reports
that I have the latest version (0.9.45) and I see no way to force any other
version. Maybe it's just not there yet.

It brings up an unrelated question though: is there any way to install
packages intended for other distros? For example I would have liked to try
Lotus Symphony but it's only available for Red Hat and Suse. Is there
perhaps an installer for other "wrappers" ?

You have to add the official WineHQ repositories. Follow the directions
here:

http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb

Specifically, from a commandline these 2 are of interest for you:

wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-
key add -

followed by:

sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/feisty.list -
O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

If you are running edgy or dapper just replace feisty with edgy/dapper.
If you are running gutsy just use the feisty list as there is no gutsy
list yet, feisty one works fine though.

Then check for updates again and you will have 0.9.46 available.

Yes, check up on a program called "Alien", it can convert redhat RPM
packages to debian packages.
