Alt comp freeware accessability

M

Maurice Helwig

I regularly read this newsgroup and occasionly ask a guestion or two
-- like now.
I am contemplating moving from my 56k dial up connection to an ADSL
connection on another server. However they do not have a news server so
I will not be able to connect to alt.comp.freeware or any other newsgroup.
Is there any software or ways to access newsgroups without an isp
providing a news server - prefreably in a news reader program.

You can use
<http://news.individual.net/index.html>
Registration and use of this NetNews service are free of charge.
This server is operated by the computer center of Freie Universität Berlin,
Germany.

And you can use your news reader program.

Yes; you can sign up for a free account at news.individual.net. It's
run by some university in Germany and has an excellent reputation of
being a high-quality news server.

This is a quote from a previous post from Q:

<http://news.individual.net/> offers a very very good free Usenet
account; their server carries only text groups and has great
completion.

You register and they set you up and email your logon. It might take a day or
two, but it seems to be a great free text news server. It is better than either
of the two I had available locally.

All you'll need to do is to set your newsreader to "news.individual.net"
and the new logon, grab a list of groups and you're ready.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I will register with the site and try it out before I move to ADSL

I use individual.net and it works great. I can't believe it is free.

Try news.individual.net or news://news.readfreenews.net for text messages. Another way I browse
text groups is on the Web with Google Groups (http://groups.google.com). It has a very high &
long retention rate, and posts are fully searchable.

If you're after binaries, first check with your new ISP about if they have special access to
another ISP's news server (might be a couple more $ on your access fee). Also, have a look in
alt.free.newsservers as that is a group devoted to discussing free servers (although it is going
through a bit of a flame war at the moment). You can also search for free servers using
UseNetSpider or NewsHunter4 (both free).
