allow metric units of measurement as you used to

I used to be able to opt for metric units of measurement within Word but the
latest version I now have seems to only allow points, pixels and inches. Is
there a way around this?

You don't say what version of Word you have, but every version I've used (up
to 2003), has included "Centimeters" and "Millimeters" in the list on the
General tab of Tools | Options. Perhaps you're running into the problem of
"character units" as Graham assumes in his reply.
