It's a little annoying, OE was my default news reader, but I enjoy being able
to handle appointments etc and would love to have a news reader in Outlook...
to me it would seem complete.

OL has no newsreader capability, OE is the default newsreader and my be
launched from IE or OL.
"%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews

You can add the News item to the Go menu in Outlook and it will launch
whatever is chosen in IE's options as your newsreader. By defaul, it's
Outlook Express. There are also commercial Outlook add-ins that will
provide news inside Outlook as though it's a folder.
