All programs list disappeared?

G

Guest

After doing a system restore to reverse a download that wasn't compatible,
all of sudden when I click on start menu and point to programs nothing
happens, ie. no list pops up as it used to.
System seems to be spyware and virus free.
Running xp home sp2.

Any ideas???

Thanks

Start Menu - 'All Programs' is empty or nothing happens when you click the menu:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/allprograms.htm
When you click Programs menu in the Start Menu, it may show as (Empty)
Nothing happens when you click All Programs in Start Menu
Not all the shortcuts are displayed

Thanks for the reply.
I had done some searching before I posted and tried the regsvr32 /i
shell32.dll fix first and that didn't help. The next step is changing the
registry but I don't know if I understand exactly how to do that without
screwing it up.
Would a system restore to an even earlier date have any effect on this
problem?
Just a note. When a go to add or remove programs in control panel they all
do seem to still be there.

Just ran a little test. Do the following:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users folder
3. Right Click on Start Menu, click on Properties
4. Make sure that Hidden is unchecked, if not uncheck, click on OK and make
sure Apply to this folder, sub-folders, ... is set
5. Click on OK.

Check the same for all other users.

I checked Hidden on my username and All Users, and received an Empty when I
tried All Programs on Start Menu.

Hope this is your problem as well.

When you said 'all users' you are talking about the 'C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu folder correct?

And you did check the user your having problem with:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu

Correct?

Just double checking.

If so, there is a Policy setting in the registry, but if it is set, you
would not see All Programs text on the Start Menu.

The only alternate, is what someone else mentioned. The registry settings
for:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

Programs REG_EXPAND_SZ %USERPROFILE%\Start
Menu\Programs

are not pointing to the correct folder.

To determine if %USERPROFILE" is set correctly:

1. Click on Start Menu | Run
2. Type cmd, click OK
3. Type set
4. Look for USERPROFILE, and see if it matches you AND the correct drive and
folder (normally C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME

USERNAME and USERPROFILE should match dealing with the USERNAME.

Thanks for your help. Checked the cmd and user profiles and seem as if they
should be correct.
Now I've really botched something. Did some searching and found a file
allprogramsdisable and downloaded it. Followed directions without thinking
and put it in registry and it removed my all program button from the start
menu. It was a really bonehead mistake and now I can't figure how to undo it.

Any ideas?

Next time, open the file in an editor. I could have told you the registry
key it changed.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

NoStartMenuMorePrograms REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (or
0x00000001 to enable NoStartMenuMorePrograms feature)
