All of my DAT files (*.dat) have the Windows Media Player
icon next to them. This is only on my notebook computer
which has XP Home. How do I fix this. Under properites
the dat files say that there is no application associated
with the files which is correct. IF I double click on
the dat file the WMP starts.

What would you like your *.dat files associated with?
Change it to that.

application but for some reason my are associated with
Windows Media Player. If you do a quick search for dat
files (*.dat) you will see the icon for those files are
not WMP. How do I change the icon to what you see?

Folder Options - File Types - Advanced.

Some dat files are multimedia files.

*.dat files aren't supposed to be associated with any

It doesn't matter that they are associated with wmp, programs that access
the dat files still know how to use them. Some files with dat extensions
are media files so the association isn't always incorrect.

I don't know that you can lock all desktop items. However, since the desktop shuffle happens for other reasons, this is what I did to resolve the issue. I alphabetized my folders using numbers to give them priority i.e. 1Support, 2Programs, etc. Then whenever the shuffle happens I right click the desktop and use the arrange by name feature. You can lock some items down with this. By the way, too many items on the desktop is not a good thing.

Why don't you turn on auto arrange then as well. Though I think you're replying to the wrong thread.
