all application software does not open

windows xp home edition. All application software for this laptop does not
open. Instead of the normal icons , a file icon appears in their place and
when clicked, the message appears "windows can not open this file" , "File
xxx.lnk". xxx is the application software.

I've downloaded Sp2 update, performed a malicious software tool search that
did not find any viruses. I'm lost, can any one help?

Hi,

Go to www.dougknox.com, click on WinXP Fixes. Go to file association fixes,
then locate the .lnk (shortcut) fix. Download and run this file to fix the
shortcut association.
