Hello,
If you are sure your problem is being caused by
spyware and you cannot download an anti-spyware tool, you
might try buying Anti-Spyware from your local store. That
way you can install from a CD rather than downloads.
SpySweeper by Webroot is an excellent tool. It costs
around 19.99 to 29.99 depending on which store you choose.
You can also order it @www.webroot.com but you will
have to pay shipping plus you have to wait for the
product to reach you
You did not mention if you are running anti-virus
software. If so be sure to run a check in real time as
well as in safe mode.
I hope this helps you and I wish you the best of luck
with this issue. Feel free to e-mail me if the problem
persits.

Hi,

You maybe face something called rootkit. This should somehow help detecting
such malware http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html if
it appears to reside in your system.

If you successfully detect and remove the rootkit, once again scan the
system in the safe mode.
However you didn't mention any antivirus software - this situation can also
be created by residing virus, so use antivirus software and for the
beginning you can use one of available online (internet) scanners to check
and clean the system. Here are some of such online scanners:

Trend Micro's online scanner: http://housecall.antivirus.com

Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Bitdefender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

And of course protect your system with installed firewall, antivirus,
antitrojan and antispyware software. And keep the system up to date with
current service packs and patches.

Boot into Safe Mode (F8) at startup;
Empty your temporary files AND your Temporary Internet Files* C:\Documents
and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder ;
Run the scan while in safe mode;
If you are running SP2, open IE--->Tools--->Manage Add-ons, and uncheck any
BHO's that you don't recognize.

*The .tif are Temporary Internet Files, and are stored in a different barn
than 'normal' temp files.
Here's how I kludge thru to them: Open Windows Explorer--->C:\Documents and
Settings. Then it's to the Tool Bar--->Folder Options--->View--->Hidden
Files and Folders and check the box "Show hidden files and folders" > Now
expand C:\Documents and Settings and under each user you will now see a
folder "Local Settings". Open that puppy and choose Temporary Internet
Files. I am not concerned about the cookies therein, but everything else
can go for now.

Ron, do you have experience using CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com)? Instead of
manually going into all the various temp folders and deleting files for
problems like this, I've been using CCleaner to do it (it's very fast). Was
wondering if you've used it and if it addresses all the folders containing
potential problems.

Hi Gary,
Yes. I have use CCCleaner, and carry it on a USB Key. I think it's a nifty
program that our brethren in this NG put us onto.

I go the longer route on this tho in the NG's, when I have to consider that
the user might not have access to the Internet from the computer in trouble.
