after sp2 install, xp frequently freezes

I installed xp's sp2, and it seemed to install properly. But they my
computer started to spontaneously freeze -- not even responding to
ctr-alt-del -- at random times, with no particular pattern. Each time, I had
to press the power button to shut down.

I've since uninstalled the service pack, and everything's fine. But it seems
like I should have it for security reasons, and I don't want to miss out on
security updates from now on.

What should I do?
