I'm running XP Pro...upgraded to SP2 several months ago and everything was
working fine....
downloaded and installed newest updates a few days ago, now
my machine will boot up, show the desktop, and start loading apps, settings,
etc...then all of a sudden it will freeze...
have not installed anything new, and the restore point will not
work....won't even boot into safe mode at all, it will show that drivers are
loaded then will go to a black screen and stop....
So I figured booting up from the CD and running the recovery console to
repair the install might work, but before running the recovery console, after
selecting it and the correct drive, it prompts me for an administrator
password, which I never put in to begin with...
Is there some kind of default password that is used, or some way to get
around that password prompt to start the console...
Any help would be appreciated....

Will the machine boot in safe mode?

No...it will load the drivers it needs and when it gets to the last one it
hangs there for about 30-40 seconds or more then goes to a black screen and
doesn't do anything else...

Chris, why not do a repair install instead? The available repairs from
recovery console are limited and I can't think of one that will help you
out of this situation. Unless there are more details that you've left out
and they explain why you're trying to work from recovery console.

For a repair install:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

NOTE: The above article applies to retail CD or a generic OEM CD. If your
Windows came preinstalled and your recovery media has been customized by
the manufacturer, check your system manual for restore/repair options and
for directions.

Hi Sharon...thanks for the reply....as I logged on from my laptop to view
this message, I had already started the repair/reinstallation process on my
desktop, which is the machine that I've been having the problem with....I
realized that that was the next to last step I was coming to.....the last one
being to pop out my drive and pop it into my work machine and then do a
backup of all my files, and software, settings, etc....to my external drive
then reformat the drive that had the problems...but thanks for the response
and input/advice...take care

You're welcome, Chris, and good luck with the repair install.

Before doing a repair install, Service Pack2 MUST be uninstalled unless
it was integrated into the Windows disk you are using for the repair
installation (included on the disk or slipstreamed)
Otherwise you run a very good chance of ending up in a reboot loop
after the repair.
To do this from recovery console:

Recovery Console Manual Uninstall

Step 1. At the root directory of C: Type "CD
C:\C:\Windows\$NTServicePackUninstall$\SPuninst" or "CD
C:\$NTServicePackUninstall$\SPuninst" without the quotes
Step 2. Now type "Batch Spuninst.txt" without the quotes
Step 3. Type "Exit"
Step 4. Once this is done you will want to boot to windows and go to
the Add or
Remove Programs area and uninstall SP2 from there, this will complete
the removal.

Good point, Raztax!
