Here's some previous answers to the same question. There should
be some ideas in these to get you started.

Outlook Express contains some very powerful anti-spam capabilities.
Tools>Message Rules>Mail
x- Where the To line contains people
x- Delete it from server
Then click on the blue "contains people" line type in your exact email
address and click "add". Then click options and tic the line
"Message does not contain the people below".
Now just click all 3 "OK" boxes and you have created a very powerful
rule that will stop any mail from being downloaded to you unless it
has your address line in the "To" field. Most spam will not have your
actual address in the "To" field and will be deleted.
Hope this helps

Under "Tools | Message Rules | Mail"
1) Select conditions:
Check "Where the Subject line contains specific words."
Apply your word choices whenever it asks/allows.
2) Select the Actions for your rule.
Check both of: (way at the end of the list)
Do not Download it from the server.
Delete it from the server.
3) Rule Description (click on an underlined value to edit it):
You'll be on your own from here, I've no idea what's underlined and not.
Is it possible to: "Apply this rule BEFORE the message
arrives"?
4) Name of the rule:
"Mail Rule #1" works for me...
This is how it's supposed to work in Outlook Express.

Start creating rule
If TO or CC contains people, select your desired action(s) and Stop
processing more rules.
Click contains people, click address book, Shift and Down arrow to
select
all, then click button in window.
Names should transfer to right side.
Click options to change to Does Not contain.
FYI one rule I use that catches most (not all) SPAM is
If TO or CC does Not contain my email address,
then I move to my Junk folder and Stop processing more rules.
Most SPAM comes in without your actual email address appearing.

From (e-mail address removed) Thu Jan 31 10:00:09 2002
There are many posting asking how to prevent unsolicited adverts in
Inboxes (SPAM). So I have put together a couple of rudimentary
precautions that a newbie (or even a not so newbie) can adopt.
The first rule you were ever taught was to "Never talk to strangers,
they may want to hurt you". That applies now more than ever. e.g If
someone tries to sell you an insurance policy at your door and you show
any interest, that's it, you can't get rid. The same applies here, never
reply or unsubscribe to SPAM.
These instructions assume that (as a newbie) you are using Outlook
Express but most E-mail/news applics have similar features.
If you are getting SPAM :-
To start with you should set up Message Rules to prevent them from
getting to you thus:-
1)Read a few of your unsolicited mails, and find a short phrase that is
common to all, such as "Fwd this to all your friends", "Guaranteed to
make you money" or "Click here to be removed" etc. It must be a phrase
you will NEVER receive in a legitimate mail.
2)Click Tools - Message Rules > Mail - New.
3)In the 1st box check "Where the message body contains specific words".
4)Click on "specific words" in the 3rd box. Another dialog box will
open, type in your "phrase" in the space provided and click on ADD then
OK. This last box will disappear and your phrase will be added to your
rule.
5)In the second box check "Delete from server"
6)Go to the last box ("New Rule #1") and change what's there to give the
rule a name by which you can easily identify it, because believe me, you
are going to have a dozen or so rules by the time you have finished.
7)Review the rule in the 3rd box, as it is presented here verbatim. If
the SPAM doesn't comply to what's here it will get through. Repeat 4) to
add more phrases from other SPAMs. The bits highlighted/underlined can
be modified/added to if necessary by clicking on them.
8)Click OK - OK and that is it, rule set up ! If you did it right you
shouldn't be bothered by that bit of SPAM again. When the next style of
SPAM starts to turn up, you can either modify this rule or create
another.
This doesn't prevent SPAM from being sent to you, but it prevents it
getting to your screen, wastes the SPAMmer's time and bandwidth, and
hopefully saves your sanity. Look also at the domain part of the
originators address. Is it mostly coming from one or two domains? If so,
set up a rule that filters out these domains, in 3) substitute "Where
the from line contains specific people" and just type in the part of the
senders address from the @ onwards, but beware, if they have masked
their return address as a bogus someone at Hotmail, Yahoo etc, as is
often the case, you could be blocking out some of your friends.
Now to prevent any more from being sent to you in the first place, you
should mask your identity in your settings to something like
(e-mail address removed) as it is your address in these
settings, innocently sent out with your news group postings etc that is
the main source of addresses for SPAMmers. Their automatic address
trawling applications will mistake the above example as a genuine
address and add it to a mailing list. Any mail shots will be returned to
their fictitious return address and bounced around the world a few times
until it eventually (missing your Inbox) dies, homeless, of exhaustion.
The insertion of SPAMLESS, NOSPAM, REMOVETHIS etc in uppercase should
catch the eye of a genuine respondent, if they have half a brain they
will remove it.
1)Click on Tools - Accounts - News
2) Double click the one of the accounts.
3)Change any field that gives your E-address to something that will
mislead a so called intelligent machine, but an even more so called
intelligent human can recognize as a ruse. Click OK
4)Repeat 2&3 for the other accounts.
5)If you are worried that your address in your E-mail headers will be
misused, Click on Tools - Accounts - Mail and repeat 2,3&4.
Good luck.

How's that for a variety of answers?
Personally, I find adding everyone in my address book to an
'approved' filter is effective. All other mail goes to my
'spam' or 'trash' folder which I can quickly scan over for
anything useful.
I also send any email with html to my trash folder. Spammers
are the main users of html in email.
Another filter I use is for email not addressed to me in
under TO or CC:
You'll also notice my email address used in NGs is for filtering
spam. My private email address through my ISP is never revealed
in NGs. 99% of msgs sent to my 'myrealbox' address is spam.
Setting up a mail box at
www.myrealbox.com is free.
Consider starting over. If you have used your real address in NGs,
you may have to get a new one and close that account as the spam
will never stop coming once the dirtbags get a hold of it.
