Advanced Stand by mode

Is there a way (or free utility) to put computer in "Stand by" mode so that
I need to click mouse button or press any key to wake it up ? Often, when I
put my PC in Stand by and I come back after some time I see my monitor
turned on (I guess it's because my optical mouse is very sensitive)

I guess using a keyboard with extra function keys is the easiest way. Just
press the "sleep" button and there you are.

I re-directed my sleep button to shut down the computer. I'm always tired
and sleepy at shut down time, and it saves a little hassle.

I prefer to use the "Hibernate" option in preference to the "Standby"
option. Hibernation stores everything in memory to the hard disk and
switches off the computer. You can then switch off the power if you wish. On
resumption you are where you left off. Both the computer "on" switch and
the keyboard "sleep" button can be programmed for hibernation in Control
Panel -- navigate to Power Options. This applies to XP -- not sure about
other operating systems.

I have the same problem. According to a MS NG you have to go into the BIOS
to fix the problem. It has nothing to do with an optical mouse. I for one
am not qualified to mess around in the BIOS so I live with the problem.

Agreed. Hibernation fully shuts down the PC, and it restarts in about
30 seconds when you power up again. MUCH faster than a normal startup,
and your apps are still open and ready to go -- which is a great bonus.
