adsl won't connect to the to the internet

I currently have adsl that hooks up throught a lan card I
can connect to the server but when I try to open up
internet explorer it tells me that the web page cannot be
displayed I have gone through all the connection settings
aand everything seems to be correct I am running windows
xp pro any help would be great
