Ads pop-up with IE6 when browser is not active

I have Windows XP Home Ed., IE ver.6 // Multiple pop-up
ads using IE keep launching automatically every 5 minutes
even when I'm not using the internet, or have my IE
browser launched. My default browser is not IE. This
just started on 9/10 - day after my last running of
windows update. I have DSL using a Linksys 4-hub router
that's on all the time, the latest Norton Anti-Virus
software, and a firewall on the router.

Can anyone please help me stop these annoying
interuptions??

I've also tried running an adware eliminator program
which found some stuff, but the same problem persists.
