does mySql have sprocs these days? rofl

how about Analysis Services, a decent IDE; or an ETL tool?

ROFL

Me pissed off?? Nono just amused.

Just for the record, I use MySQL so I don't have to load that DotNet
Framework 2.x overload just to install an SQL-server.
MySQL installs in 10 minutes, not two hours.

From ver. 5.0, yes and there is a tool to convert M$ SQL-Server to MySQL. It
is working better than I was expecting. Even not to complicated SP's. The
syntax is not too different, but some fieldtypes ofcause are.

I guess you will be better off if you download it and explore it yourself.
It's free to download, and for an IDE download MySQL Manager Lite also free.
The printing is unavailable in the Lite version though :(

yeah I've done some mySql / php dev.. ecommerce-- in the past

I love the mySql environment.. especially phpMyAdmin.. I just haven't
had a chance to look at 5.0 / sprocs yet.. and these days-- a database
without 'Analysis Services' isnt' relevent to me anymore

and plus the big three vendors all have freeware editions now so I just
prefer sticking with those.

SQL 2005 express ROCKS and it works great for relatively complex
databases

just the 'little' issue of incompatability and licensing restrictions..
and needing to purchase a support agreement.. and needing to post the
source code from your apps according to the GPL

I never had a problem installing the .NET framework

Just the 'little' issue on DotNet Framework istall ;)

D

dbahooker

you running it on a 486?

under Wine?

ROFL

I've honestly never had a problem installing it.. maybe the problem is
with your crappy linux firewall lol

-Aaron

A

aaron.kempf

what else you got on the server?

do you run antispyware / av?

I've installed SQL 2005 at least 20 times in the past year; and I've
never had anything (since the release) take an hour

how much Ram you got?
I just can't believe that there are still mySql people out there..
yeah; it was a great product-- but once the 'Big 3' responded by making
a freeware version; mySql just seems kinda passe now

No / Yes

SQL2005 was ok, but the DotNet Framework was killing me. As I remember
together it was som 150+ megs to dl. MySQL 5 is 35 megs, with all needed
tools about 50 megs.

1G RAM
WD 200G HD * 3
XP Pro

Well, MySQL suites my needs, so I'll stay with it. At work we have just
migrated from M$ SQL to MySQL. It works as well, and at least just as fast
and safe. All db's are migrated and works flawlessly. But thats my opinion.

works as fast as analysis services?

drag and drop instead of writing sql statements? web based
pivotTables?

sub second summary against a billion rows?
automated indexing?

I just haven't been using dialup for almost a decade anymore; out here
on this side of the pond we have this thing called 'Broadband'

and you see.. I just prefer having my shit in one place; instead of
needing to install drivers on any app that touches it

I'm glad that you've told me your good experience with mySql.. most of
the linux dorks over here are trying to get me to use postgres; i just
dont see a place for 9 different open source database systems.. if you
know what i mean.

I definitely respect mySql-- more than anything-- I mean-- the security
in that product is great.. SQL Server can't restrict a particular logon
to a specific IP address-- so I definitely APPRECIATE mysql..

but I mean.. SSIS, SSAS, SSRS? does mySql have any of those?
I just dont like piecemeal systems; it's 10 times as much work for
developers

and, btw when you said you had 3 wd 200 gb drives.. are you talking
about a software raid 5 set?

Good point, my fire/oven analogy kinda breaks down there...I don't think
they're mutually exclusive, either.

Agreed, thanks.

BTW for aaron/susie's benefit I'll point out I said 'project' with a
small 'p' to mean any kind of Access application: vanilla MDB, ADP,
etc. Apologies for any confusion caused.

obviously knows nothign about huh?

I used to be a DAO _LEPER_.. almost 10 years ago.. Office 2000 came out
in what; fall of 1999? I was on the beta program for that one and I
definitely started usign Access Data Projects and MDB with ADO.. mainly
because of the stability problems we had with Access 97.

the next spring; i walked into a company that had 80 access databases /
applications.. all writen in 97.. I rewrote a ton of them to ADP and
SQL Server-- because we were sick and tired of making people wait 60
seconds when they opened their apps

and we were sick and tired of using DAO because it gave memory leaks.

Just because I disagree with any use of DAO anywhere; does that mean
that I 'dont know the library'

Why don't you stop with the personal attacks; pull your head out of
your ass and realize that there is STILL a practical RAD environment
for VB developers.

VB.net is a FAILURE.
DAO revival is a JOKE.

THERE IS A NEW VERSION OF ADO AND IM ****ING STOKED ABOUT IT

A

aaron.kempf

yeah; im just glad that there is an ADO revival

I would rather get ass-raped then ever touch DAO again

Personally, I think you should be ass-raped for the crap you always
spout about ADP's being so great and MDB's being so crap!

With your anger issues (re hundreds of your other posts) I'm sure you
will have already served some time in the slammer - and likely been
corn-holed many times - hence your new found interest.

MDB's rule and ADP's suck ass - lose your training wheels and come to
the dark side - I spit on ADP and their users!

A

aaron.kempf

because I SPEAK THE TRUTH?

I dont eat workarounds for breakfast.

Simple, Bound Data Entry and Reporting.
Does MDB provide it?

ROFL HELL NO

MDB is dead; anyone that uses it for anything should be SPIT ON

so is this correct?

Vista contains ADO 6.0?

YAY-- that is the best news I've ever heard of

Not exactly.

With Vista the MDAC as a separate install is gone. The MDACs contained and
were often labeled by the most current version of ADO they supported,
although they also contained other components - mostly dealing with OLE and
OLE DB.

With Vista Windows will have as part of the O/S the DAC (Data Access
Components). The DAC essentially replaces the MDAC. See Aaron.Kemps
interesting 11/3 post on why they labeled the package "6.0".

At this time "DAC 6.0" doesn't include a version "6.0" of ADO it contains
"ADO 2.8x". The DAC also still supports previous versions of ADO. The
primary changes will be found in the OLE and OLE DB components and newer
providers (when they appear).

MS has been drifting in this direction for awhile now, as the MDAC packages
had become platform specific anyway.

dbahooker

seriously manhooker.. what in the hell are you talking about?

MDB is for retards.. can you do ANYTHING without utilizing a dozen
workarounds?

I dont want to link tables; refresh tables.. I don't want to enumerate
through my queries and edit the connection strings for SQL Passthrough
Queries.

MDB is obsolete.

EAT SHIT mdb script kiddie
